May Newsletter

Hello and welcome to my May newsletter!

This month, I held an Adjournment debate in the House of Commons on the Condition of Stockport Railway Station. I used this opportunity to call on Avanti, Network Rail and the Government to work together to accelerate investment in our station to deliver safety, accessibility and high-quality service for all passengers. Online, I ran a survey about the condition of Stockport Railway Station and I am grateful to all residents stakeholders who provided me with information and data. I was pleased to be able to raise some of the concerns shared by residents with the Minister.

I know that recent flooding in Meadow Mill has had a detrimental impact on residents. I raised this in Parliament during a Westminster Hall debate and I urged the government to support the strengthening of flood defences in Stockport. In addition, Stockport Council has organised flood engagement sessions across our borough. Our nearest session will take place in Stockport town centre between 3pm to 7pm, on Thursday 12 June 2025 at the Merseyway Innovation Centre. More information can be found on the link - https://rb.gy/neab4s

Animal welfare issues always feature highly in my inbox and it is clear that it is an important subject for residents. As such I enjoyed meeting “Herbie” in Westminster ahead of World Animal Free Research Day this month. You can find more information about this campaign on the following link - https://www.animalfreeresearchuk.org/herbies-law/

In Parliament this month, I also contributed to a debate on care for Parkinson’s patients. From a shortage of NHS services and lack of exemption for prescription charges to the postcode lottery that leaves many patients unable to claim a blue badge, I urged the government to ensure that more people with the condition get the support that they need- https://tinyurl.com/yevzpbwc

It was a pleasure to be able to welcome a second group of volunteers from Stockport Car Share Scheme to Parliament. They enjoyed their time on an extremely sunny terrace alongside the Thames.

I am grateful to Katy from Stockport for visiting Westminster as part of an important mass lobby event to talk to MPs about our welfare system. The insights Katy shared during our conversation were incredibly valuable and I am glad we had the opportunity to meet. As always, I will reflect on all correspondence from constituents and write back to each & every person from Stockport constituency who has contacted me about this issue.

Skilled well paid jobs are important to Stockport and I was pleased to recognise the importance of defence contracts to local company, KNDS, in the following Written Parliamentary Question. https://tinyurl.com/mrywz3w3

I also welcome that average funding per pupil in Stockport is increasing by 3% compared to 2024/25- a funding increase above the national average per pupil increase of 2.15%. I raised the issue of school funding in Stockport with the government- https://tinyurl.com/3vhwm3x2

I have received some extremely complex and difficult cases from constituents this month. Care workers, some of whom are in this country on a visa sponsored by their employer, have received their wages. Alarmingly, workers have not been paid for up to three months and this has caused them considerable hardship.

My team and I are working incredibly closely with the local authority, HMRC, Government ministers and Greater Manchester Police in an effort to support constituents. I had the opportunity to ask a Business Question on this issue in the House of Commons. https://tinyurl.com/4au88wve

The below graphic provides an indication of the casework enquiries that I received during April. My team has been working hard this month and statistics for May will be available in next month’s newsletter.

During VE Commemorations I attended a service at Stockport War Memorial. There was also an incredible sense of community and a warm welcome from residents at a local street party in the Heatons.

It was a real pleasure to host Sir John Benger at Stockport College. The questions from students were wide ranging and he also shared the various opportunities in the House of Commons available for young people wanting a career in the Crown Service. Sir John was the former Clerk of the House of Commons and he is now the Master of St Catharine’s at Cambridge University. He is originally from Stockport and we are very proud of him.

I wrote to the new Leader of Stockport Council this month to set out some of the areas where I hope we can work together to improve our town for all residents. See my full letter below.

In June, I will be holding a drop-in session in Edgeley for Stockport residents to meet me and raise any concerns. Please contact my office if you would like to come along.

Thank you for reading my May newsletter. My constituency office is open to visitors from 10:00am to 3.30pm on weekdays (excluding public holidays). I hold regular constituency surgeries- please get in touch with me if you wish to discuss any issues.
