July Newsletter
Hello and welcome to my July newsletter!
The 4th of July marked one year since Labour was elected to Government.
July 5th marked the 77th anniversary of the NHS. I will continue pushing for urgent action on NHS dentistry and championing the vital investment needed for Stepping Hill Hospital. I raised these issues with the Health Secretary.
This month, the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill progressed through the House of Commons. I am deeply committed to improving our welfare system and I agree with the Government that the current system is broken, and in urgent need of reform. However, instead of helping people out of poverty and into skilled well paid employment, I believe this Bill risks pushing more of my constituents and disabled people across the country into further hardship. I made the difficult but necessary decision to vote against the Bill at second and third reading. You can read my full statement on my website - https://shorturl.at/pyoBJ
I asked the Prime Minister about the critical need for social housing in Stockport; Labour’s £39 billion investment into social and affordable housing, the biggest increase in almost 50 years, must provide for those most in need.
I added my name to a letter coordinated by Labour Friends of Palestine & the Middle East addressed to the Foreign Secretary which raises serious concerns about the Israeli Defence Minister’s reported plans to forcibly transfer all Palestinian civilians in Gaza to a camp in the devastated city of Rafah. I also added my name to a cross-party letter to the Foreign Secretary urging the British Government to recognise the state of Palestine.
I welcomed the recent announcement by the Secretary of State for Transport and the Chancellor of record investment into the public transport network in Greater Manchester. I have a long track record of campaigning for the extension of the Metrolink tram network from Manchester into Stockport town centre, and this Labour Government has committed to deliver that funding. I also asked the Transport Secretary about future funding for Reddish South Station.
Stockport residents need public transport that is reliable, affordable and accessible. In a debate this month on the future of the West Coast Mainline, I raised several issues such as the poor performance of Avanti, high ticket prices and the condition of Stockport station.
I warmly welcome the announcement that Pladis, the owner of McVitie’s, is investing £21 million into their Stockport factory. This significant investment will create 45 new jobs, safeguard hundreds more, and reinforce Stockport’s reputation as a vital hub for innovation and industry- McVitie's owner announces £21m investment in Stockport factory with 45 new jobs - Manchester Evening News
I recently conducted a survey inviting Stockport residents to share their experiences with me regarding Royal Mail. The responses paint a troubling picture: deliveries have become less frequent and less reliable, pointing to wider issues in the management and performance of our postal service.
I have now written directly to Royal Mail’s CEO and to Justin Madders MP, the Minister responsible for Royal Mail- Royal Mail Performance in Stockport — Navendu Mishra MP.
I visited the Vegetarian Society head office in Manchester, where I was able to meet the team as well as tour their brilliant teaching kitchen. The charity runs cooking classes that bring people together around healthy, sustainable food.
I had a brilliant afternoon at Reddish South Station with live music on the platform from the amazing Stockport Silver Band.
I want to thank students at the wonderful Lark Hill Primary School for inviting me to collect their letters addressed to the Prime Minister. It is inspiring to see young people passionate about Stockport and important issues like climate change.
I had an important discussion with Karen James OBE, the Chief Executive of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust about the future of Stepping Hill Hospital and the vital investment it needs.
ReddFest was a spectacular success, once again.
One of my proudest achievements is securing the future of the King Street West fire station. This year I was elected as the Vice-Chair of the Fire Brigades Union parliamentary group based on a longstanding record of supporting our firefighters. You can read more about our local fire station here - https://shorturl.at/4bkNg
I attended the Climate Coalition’s Act Now, Change Forever Mass Lobby in Parliament. It was a pleasure to meet with passionate people from Stockport who travelled to Westminster to share their concerns.
I was delighted to welcome a fantastic group of pupils from Cale Green Primary School to the Palace of Westminster. They asked thoughtful questions and showed great enthusiasm for how our democracy works.
I had the chance to meet representatives from Northern and discuss important issues affecting our community in Stockport including the need for improved Sunday services.
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) held a parliamentary drop-in on Organ Donation. I am proud to support NHS Blood and Transplant in their call for more people to confirm their organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/
I also welcomed students from St Mary’s Primary School in Stockport to the Palace of Westminster. These students came with some brilliant questions, especially about issues affecting our local area.
I have serious concerns regarding the provision of IVF in Stockport and Greater Manchester. Watch my question to the Leader of the House- https://fb.watch/AMCsG0gd2V/
It was great to speak to residents at my drop-in session in Heatons South about a range of local and national issues. I was joined by local ward councillors Councillor Foster, Councillor Fitzpatrick and Councillor Vibert. My thanks to Reverend Will Rubie and his colleagues for allowing us the use of the Church.
Thank you for reading my July newsletter. My constituency office is open to visitors from 10:00am to 3.30pm on weekdays (excluding public holidays). I hold regular constituency surgeries as well as coffee mornings across our constituency. Please get in touch with me if you wish to discuss any issues.
