Construction Begins at King Street West Fire Station in Stockport

I am delighted by the news of significant investment into the King Street West fire station, a vital lifesaving service for our community in Stockport. The old station will be demolished, and a brand-new, modern facility built in its place. It will include energy-efficient features like solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and a green roof. A dedicated community space will also form part of the new facility.

This funding will ensure our local firefighters continue to have the resources, facilities, and support they need to keep us all safe. As part of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s Estates Improvement Programme, King Street West is one of the first three fire stations across our region to be completely rebuilt, alongside Blackley and Whitefield.

Firefighter David Cracknell (Branch Secretary for King Street West Fire Station, Fire Brigades Union), said:

"I want to thank Navendu for his dedicated work in campaigning to keep King Street West fire station open. He has always been a strong supporter of the FBU since his election in 2019 and consistently challenged the proposed closure. This Investment marks an important step in ensuring our firefighters have the modern facilities they need to serve the public safely and effectively for years to come."

I would also like to extend my thanks to Deputy Mayor Kate Green for visiting King Street West Fire Station with me in 2023. This was a great opportunity to see first hand the dedication and hard work of our firefighters in Stockport and discuss how we could best support them moving forward. See our visit here.

As Vice Chair of the Fire Brigades Union Parliamentary Group, I continue to champion the interests of firefighters in the House of Commons. Locally, I believe it is vital that we maintain fully serviced and staffed fire stations in Stockport and across Greater Manchester. That is why I have been campaigning with the FBU to ensure the King Street West site stays open and receives the essential investment it needs to operate safely and effectively.

Following the 2024 parliamentary boundary review, the Stockport constituency is now served by two fire stations. I will continue working to ensure both receive the investment and support they need to deliver their vital service.

The Manchester FBU branch also highlighted the importance of this project in a recent social media post. View their message here. It was a pleasure to join the crew at King Street West as the station closed its doors for the last time before construction begins.

Finally, I want to extend my sincere thanks to all firefighters in Stockport and across Greater Manchester for their unwavering commitment to keeping us safe. They perform an essential and often challenging job, and this investment is a small but important step toward recognising that service.
