Hello and welcome to my August Newsletter.
While Parliament is in summer recess throughout August, it provides a valuable opportunity to spend more time here in Stockport. This summer, I have been meeting with community groups, businesses and local organisations. I have been delighted to visit many fantastic local initiatives and speak with people who work tirelessly for our community. I want to take this opportunity to share some highlights, alongside some important updates and announcements from the Labour Government.
Stockport County Community Trust does fantastic work supporting people across our town, making a real difference through sport, education and community programmes. I attended the launch of the Trust's new strategy, which sets out an ambitious vision to tackle inequality, improve health and wellbeing, and create meaningful opportunities for people of all ages. It was inspiring to hear from people whose lives have been positively impacted by the Trust's work.
I was pleased to welcome the team and young people from L!sten, Act, Change to my constituency office to discuss the important work they are doing to amplify youth voice across Stockport. It was encouraging to hear young people taking an active interest in their futures, the opportunities available to them and their peers, and the barriers they can face when trying to access work experience and employment opportunities.
Houldsworth Golf Club has been at the heart of the local community since 1910, making golf and its facilities accessible to everyone. While enjoying the beautiful surroundings, we discussed some important issues affecting the club. The club is committed to remaining accessible for local people, and it is important that this valued community asset is supported and protected for future generations.
St Matthew's Church offers a fantastic range of community activities and events, right in the heart of Edgeley. It offers a warm welcome to everyone in our community, and I am looking forward to visiting their Wired Café Hub on a Saturday morning next month to see more of their work first-hand. It was a pleasure to welcome Philip from the church to my office recently. We had a great conversation about all that is happening at St Matthew's.
Following our recent visit to Autisk, where Councillor Paul Wright and I saw a number of concerning issues, we have now written to Stockport Council to press for urgent action to address the condition, suitability and long-term viability of Autisk’s building - https://tinyurl.com/2b6jp6ff
I caught up with Carmel Chambers (Chief Executive of Stockport Homes) to discuss a range of issues that have been raised with me by constituents, including allocations, building maintenance, anti-social behaviour, pest control, and the importance of ensuring residents feel safe and supported in their homes. Building more council homes is an important step towards tackling the housing crisis, but it must be matched by investment in maintaining existing homes and ensuring housing providers have the resources they need to deliver high-quality services.
Health Connect is a Stockport-based health technology start-up focused on supporting improvements across health and social care. I met with Devan and Ruth to discuss some of the challenges facing care providers, including maintaining high standards of care, keeping pace with regulation, and ensuring consistency in policies and procedures. Effective systems and processes are essential not only for providers, but also for the people who rely on care services, helping to promote quality, safety, and positive outcomes. Councillor Paul Wright and I were out in Shaw Heath looking at some of the litter, fly-tipping and potholes that need attention. If you come across fly-tipping, litter or potholes in any part of Stockport, please feel free to email me at navendu.mishra.mp@parliament.uk, and I will make sure the issues are reported and followed up.
While responsibility for these issues does ultimately lie with Stockport Council, as your elected representative, I am doing everything I can to raise residents’ concerns and get problems addressed.

Residents across Stockport have been experiencing problems with late, unreliable and missed deliveries, and I have been taking action to address these ongoing issues. I want to be clear that these problems are not the fault of our postal workers, who work hard every day to deliver our post. The responsibility lies with Royal Mail’s leadership to ensure there are enough staff, proper resources and effective management to provide a reliable service.
Brinnington’s Pride in Place programme has taken an important step forward with the announcement of the new Neighbourhood Board. As a member of the Board, I look forward to working with Brinnington residents to make sure we use this £20 million investment from the Labour Government to deliver lasting, positive change for the community. Stockport urgently needs an adopted Local Plan. The Government has once again granted Stockport Council additional time to bring one forward, but residents are entitled to ask why our borough still lacks an up-to-date plan when housing need continues to rise and almost 10,000 households are currently on the waiting list for social housing.

It was great to welcome Bev Craig as the new Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester after her election victory at the beginning of this month. Bev will be a fantastic Mayor, delivering free bus travel for young people, helping put more money in people’s pockets, regenerating our town centres, tackling crime and antisocial behaviour, and building the affordable homes people in Stockport and across Greater Manchester need. I am looking forward to working with her to secure further investment and opportunity for Stockport.
The Labour Government made a number of important announcements this month:
From April 2027, eligible disabled people across England will be able to benefit from free bus travel 24 hours a day, ending the unfair postcode lottery.
Labour has also announced 159 new NHS mental health centres, helping people access support earlier and closer to home
I welcome the Government's announcement of the first £10 billion allocation from Labour's record £39 billion Social and Affordable Homes Programme, with around £529 million expected for Greater Manchester to help deliver approximately 4,400 homes.
A £442 million package has been announced to help ensure every rough sleeper is offered a route off the streets by Christmas, demonstrating Labour’s commitment to tackling homelessness and improving lives.

August was another busy month for my constituency office, with my team and I supporting residents from across Stockport on a wide range of issues.
