Brinnington’s New Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board

Brinnington’s Pride in Place programme has taken an important step forward with the announcement of the new Neighbourhood Board. Following Nikki Thompson’s appointment as Chair earlier this year, we now have a group of people in place to lead this programme who live and work in Brinnington, know the community well and will play a crucial role in shaping how the £20 million investment is used. The Board members that Niki has selected bring with them a wealth of knowledge and connections to the local community. This £20 million investment from the Labour Government represents a significant opportunity for the neighbourhood, and its success will ultimately depend on making sure local people have a genuine say in how this money is used.

I will be a member of the Neighbourhood Board, alongside Brinnington ward Councillor Christine Carrigan. We will work closely with Nikki and the rest of the Board to ensure residents’ views are heard, that local priorities are properly reflected, and that the decisions taken are focused on delivering lasting, positive change for Brinnington.

The next stage of this programme will be particularly important. The Board will work with residents to develop Brinnington’s Pride in Place Plan, setting out the community’s overarching vision for change over the next decade. The Plan will be submitted to the Government for approval in November 2026. We will be listening to residents about what they want to see change in Brinnington through meaningful and sustained engagement that will seek to understand more about the strengths we should build on, and identify the challenges that this investment can help address.

As part of this engagement, residents will have opportunities to get involved in upcoming community activities and conversations. The Frozen Friday event on Friday 28 August is one opportunity to come along, meet others and share your views about Brinnington’s future. Our ice cream van will be visiting locations across Brinnington to celebrate Pride in Place and free ice creams and ice lollies will be available in exchange for sharing your thoughts about the local community.

The van will be visiting different locations around Brinnington throughout the afternoon:

1pm to 1:50pm - Manor Road

2pm to 2:50pm - Essex Road

3pm to 3:50pm - Rutland Crescent

4pm to 4:50pm - Westmorland Drive

There is also funding available through the Pride in Place Community Conversations Fund, which will provide small grants of £100 to £500 to support local organisations in Brinnington to deliver community activities that bring people together, and create opportunities for residents to share their views, ideas and priorities for the neighbourhood. I would encourage residents to get involved in these opportunities and share their views via the survey. Whether it is an idea for improving local spaces, supporting community organisations, creating opportunities for young people, improving local facilities or strengthening community life, this is an opportunity to help shape Brinnington’s future.

No one knows Brinnington better than the people who live and work here. That is why I want to see this programme driven by the community - by the ideas, experiences and priorities of local people. I look forward to working with Nikki, the new Board, Councillor Christine Carrigan and, most importantly, Brinnington residents to make sure we seize this opportunity and deliver lasting, positive change for the neighbourhood. Together, we can ensure that Brinnington’s future is shaped by the people who know and care about it best.
