£2.6million Investment in Stepping Hill Hospital

The Government has announced that it will deliver vital maintenance in hospitals to help prevent cancelled appointments and operations, with patients in Stockport set to benefit from the Government’s Plan for Change with funding for repairs at Stepping Hill hospital.

Across the country, over 400 hospitals, mental health units and ambulance sites will be handed £750 million to tackle long-term problems such as leaky pipes, poor ventilation and electrical issues, helping to prevent thousands of cancelled operations and appointments.

This funding is vital and marks another step in this Government’s mission to fix the dire state of public service infrastructure we inherited from the Conservatives.

The projects include much needed works at Stepping Hill hospital which will help patients benefit from better services and facilities. I have a long track record of campaigning for the investment that Stepping Hill hospital needs so I am pleased that this Government is providing £2,575,000 for improvements to the internal building fabric and fixtures, water systems, energy systems, heating systems and electrical systems- along with crucial lift upgrades and replacements and fire safety works.

I recently met with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to discuss the state of Stepping Hill hospital, and the urgent investment it deserves so I welcome that this Labour Government continues to deliver on its promise to residents in Stockport to make our NHS fit for the future with the vital maintenance that our local hospital desperately needs.

Across the country, fixing the backlog of maintenance at NHS hospitals will help prevent cancellations, with services disrupted over 4,000 times in 2023/24 due to issues with poor quality buildings. The hospital funding package was confirmed in last year’s Autumn Budget, in which an extra £26 billion was secured for the NHS by the Labour Government.

A decade and a half of underinvestment has left hospitals crumbling, with burst pipes flooding emergency departments, faulty electrical systems shutting down operating theatres, and mothers giving birth in outdated facilities that lack basic dignity. Patients and staff deserve to be in buildings that are safe, comfortable and fit for purpose. Through Labour’s Plan for Change, we will make our NHS fit for the future.

I want to thank all NHS staff at Stepping Hill hospital and across Stockport for their continued hard work and dedication.
