September Newsletter
Hello and welcome to my September newsletter!
September has been an incredibly busy month in terms of local visits, casework enquiries and Parliamentary business. I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the work I have been doing, as well as on some exciting announcements from the Labour Government.
I am delighted to share fantastic news for our community: after months of campaigning, I have secured £20 million of long-term investment for Brinnington through Labour’s Pride in Place Programme. This means that over the next ten years, £2 million will be invested every single year to support Brinnington with improving local facilities, backing community groups, creating jobs, and making streets safer.
Starting this term, parents are eligible for 30 hours of government-funded childcare. Based on local rates, this will save parents in Stockport an estimated £6,400 a year per child. From next year, Labour is also expanding free school meals provision for half a million children- to all children with a parent in receipt of universal credit. In Stockport, this will mean that around 6040 children will receive free, nutritious lunches every day at school.
I welcome the British Government’s decision to recognise the State of Palestine. Read my full statement here- Recognition of the State of Palestine — Navendu Mishra MP
The Minister of State for Housing and Planning wrote to me this month regarding Stockport Council’s failure to adopt and progress with an up-to-date Local Development Plan. I am glad that Minister Pennycook intervened and I hope that this will finally get Stockport’s long-overdue Local Housing plan back on track. At the Labour Party Conference, the Chancellor announced that the Government will ensure every state primary school in England will have a library by the end of this parliament.
One in seven primary schools in the UK currently do not have access to a library - almost half of which are in the North. This announcement will give all children in Stockport and beyond access to literacy during their early years. It will ensure that every child has the best start in life, regardless of their background or where they grow up.
In Parliament this month, I raised the decline of cricket provision in state schools. More must be done to make cricket accessible to all. Watch my full contribution to the debate: https://shorturl.at/e91Lf
Earlier this month, I met with worshippers at the Elaf Mosque in Stockport. Sadly, two people threw bricks at the mosque in the early hours of 4 September. Stockport is a wonderful place and welcoming for all. This is an isolated incident and the vast majority of residents stand against hate and division.
If you have any information about this incident please contact CrimeStoppers quoting log number 1036-4/9/25 - https://shorturl.at/zQf2h
It was a pleasure to visit Whitehill Community Fire Station in Reddish with the Deputy Mayor Kate Green. Whitehill is the largest fire station in our Stockport Borough.
I caught up with firefighters who are stationed here during the rebuilding of the King Street West Fire Station in central Stockport, as part of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s Estates Improvement programme. Deputy Mayor Kate Green has played a vital role in these plans. We spoke in depth about how we could best support Fire Rescue Services colleagues moving forward.
Thank you to Paul and all the staff at Brinnington Health Centre for generously making time to meet with me. The complexity and needs of the NHS are vast. Our discussion provided valuable insight into the challenges currently facing General Practice, as well as the essential contributions they make to the wellbeing of our community.
I was delighted to visit Reddish Vale High School to see their new 3G pitch made possible with investment from the Football Foundation.
This was not my first visit to Vernon Park Primary School, but I really enjoyed the tour and meeting with students and staff. The students questioned me on a range of issues and it is always inspiring to meet young people who care about Stockport and Britain.
It was great to catch up with Jane, Sara and the team at Disability Stockport. Disability Stockport is an invaluable asset to Stockport. They work tirelessly to support local people, specialising in mental health and autism. See the link for further information- https://disabilitystockport.org.uk/
It was a privilege to join the 175th Anniversary Joint Service at St John the Baptist. It was made even more special as Revd Rowles and Bishop Davies unveiled a Heatons Heritage Society plaque marking the first Bishop of Manchester James Prince Lee who lived here in Heaton Mersey and is buried in the churchyard.
I went along to the Open Day at the Coptic Orthodox Church of the Virgin St Mary and St Mina in Heaton Moor. The church tour was excellent and I enjoyed talking to a number of worshippers as well as Father Bishoy (who has served the church for almost twenty years).
Councillor Jon Byrne and I joined Unite members on the picket line at Stockport bus depot, standing in solidarity with bus workers who took industrial action in Stockport and many parts of Greater Manchester. I fully support them in their fight for fair pay and decent conditions.
September marks 35 Years of the Macmillan Coffee Morning. It is always important to get together to support this cause; I enjoyed joining Friends of Reddish South Station for their coffee morning.
Stockport is a Fairtrade Borough, and I am always delighted to promote the Fairtrade movement. My special thanks to staff at the Co-op in Edgeley for taking the time to speak to customers about the wide range of Fairtrade products available in store. I must say my favourite product is the Fairtrade certified IPA.
Small businesses are the backbone of Stockport’s economy, and I want to celebrate their contribution to our community. Small Business Saturday is on 6 December; nominate your favourite small businesses in Stockport constituency for an award- https://forms.gle/bNvu1Z8EmjU8bsnj8
I held another drop-in session in the Heatons this month. Thank you to everyone who spoke to Councillor Dena Ryness, Councillor John Taylor and I.
September was another busy month for my constituency office, with my team and I supporting residents from across Stockport on a wide range of issues. Above is a breakdown of the cases we have taken on.
It was a pleasure to attend this year’s Labour Party Conference. There were several important announcements from the Government, including the introduction of new maintenance grants for students, a commitment to provide libraries in every primary school, and a new online NHS service. I had the opportunity to speak with Parkinson’s UK alongside a number of valuable meetings.
My constituency office is open to visitors from 10:00am to 3.30pm on weekdays (excluding public holidays). I hold regular constituency surgeries as well as coffee mornings and drop-ins across our constituency. Please get in touch with me if you wish to discuss any issues.
