Hello and welcome to my September Newsletter.

This month, the House of Commons returned from its summer recess and I was able to raise some important local issues with the Government in Westminster. I want to take this opportunity to share some highlights of the past month, alongside some important updates and announcements from the Labour Government.

Casework: Supporting Residents in Stockport

This month marked an important milestone in my work as Stockport's Member of Parliament. Since being elected in 2019, I have opened more than 50,000 cases for local residents. Behind every case is a person, a family, or a challenge that matters deeply to someone in our community.

I am grateful to everyone who joined my drop-in session in Edgeley. Residents raised a range of important issues affecting our community, and it was invaluable to hear directly about the challenges and concerns people are facing. These conversations help shape my work both locally and in Westminster.

Standing up for Stockport in Westminster

🎥In September, I raised a number of important local issues in the House of Commons:

Violence against women and girls has no place in our society. I hosted an event in Westminster for the British Transport Police to highlight their Think Again campaign and the work of their dedicated VAWG task force with MPs.

Passengers in Stockport and across the North deserve modern, reliable trains that deliver the service they expect. I joined Northern Trains in Westminster to hear about plans for a major renewal of its train fleet and the opportunities this presents for passengers. I will continue to push for proper passenger services at Reddish South station, as well as disabled access at both Heaton Chapel and Brinnington stations.

Mayor Bev Craig has a bold and positive vision for Stockport and Greater Manchester. I joined her with Greater Manchester MPs in Parliament following her election as Mayor of Greater Manchester. I am excited to work with Bev to deliver for Stockport, and this meeting was a brilliant opportunity to discuss some of the issues that matter to the people of Stockport.

Supporting Local Organisations and Initiatives

This month, Brinnington’s Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board met for the first time to begin our discussions on how the £20 million investment from the Labour Government can best be used to benefit the community in Brinnington. I was pleased to support the Visit My Mosque initiative at the Heatons Muslim Community Trust (HMCT) on Battersea Road. As always, I enjoyed speaking to the worshippers, as well as the non-Muslim visitors.

It was great to meet with Simon from Unite Union at the bus depot in Stockport to meet drivers and management and to see first-hand what goes on behind the scenes to keep Bee Network buses running smoothly. I picked up several issues that I will be raising with Transport for Greater Manchester.

Standing inside the iconic Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory was a surreal experience and a powerful reminder of the ambition and expertise that exists right here in our region. I will continue to press the Government to secure a sustainable long-term funding solution, so that this internationally renowned observatory can continue its pioneering work for generations to come.

Mike established Wellbeing Football & Sports to support kids and adults in our local area to play sport, be part of a team and get healthier. They offer free, fun football and sports for everyone, and I enjoyed meeting with them in Brinnington - Wellbeing Football and Sports

For more than 165 years, the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA) has helped shape Manchester's artistic story. It was a real pleasure to open the exhibition titled Artful Remembrance, and present awards to artists this afternoon - Artful Remembrance - MAFA 2.0 MAFA 2.0

It was wonderful to meet members of the 6th Stockport Scouts at Christ with All Saints. They asked me several questions on a wide range of issues, including litter, public transport, education, and housing.

The Maggie’s Centre in Manchester provides support for people living with cancer in Stockport and across Greater Manchester. Seeing first-hand the difference the centre makes to so many people was inspiring and brought home the enormous value of the services Maggie's offers.

🎥 You may have seen on social media the huge queue at Weir Mill, with people lining up to view apartments. That queue demonstrates the scale of the housing crisis we face and the huge demand for homes in our town. I know many residents have questions and concerns about housing and development in Stockport. The sun was out and the turnout was excellent for the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning organised by the Friends of Reddish South Station. Important Announcements for Stockport

I welcome the announcement from Labour’s Mayor of Greater Manchester of a new £60 million fund to repair roads and pavements across Greater Manchester. Stockport is set to receive £6.82 million, the third largest allocation of any borough. 

I have been pushing Stockport Council for action over the state of our roads, asking residents to share their concerns and reports with me, and passing that feedback directly on to the council. I will continue holding Stockport Council to account to make sure this opportunity is not wasted.

Labour's Playground Fund, part of the Pride in Place programme, has awarded £240,000 to improve playgrounds at Houldsworth Park, Unity Park and South Reddish Park.

After writing to the Leader of Stockport Council in July to ensure a funding bid was submitted for playgrounds in Reddish, it is great to see this investment secured for our community.

Stockport’s new fire station on King Street West has opened, providing a modern, fit-for-purpose base for our firefighters and strengthening emergency services in the town. Watch my video with Dave Pike from the Fire Brigades Union here - https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1WgivvhYiw/ 

And there is welcome funding for much-needed repairs at Stepping Hill Hospital, with £26 million for the construction of a new pathology building. This will not fix all of the problems facing Stepping Hill, and there is still a huge amount of work to do, but it is a positive step in the right direction.

The publication of Stockport’s Local Plan is a significant milestone. After years of delay under the Liberal Democrat administration at Stockport Council, I welcome the fact that the process is finally moving forward. This is the beginning of an important period of scrutiny and consultation. This month, the Labour Government announced further measures in response to Israel's ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory, concluding that the occupation is unlawful in line with the finding of the International Court of Justice. Labour Party Conference

Labour Party Conference is always a good opportunity to meet people, discuss the issues that matter to our communities, and hear from organisations doing important work across the country. I enjoyed spending time with Stockport Labour colleagues and had valuable meetings with Parkinson's UK, the Communication Workers Union, and Young Lives vs Cancer, among others.
