October 2026 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to my October newsletter. I want to take this opportunity to share some highlights of the past month from my work across Stockport and in Westminster.

Casework: Supporting Residents in Stockport

Throughout October I have continued supporting residents from across Stockport on a wide range of issues.

Standing up for Stockport in Westminster

In October, I raised a number of important local issues with the Government:

  • The privatisation of Royal Mail, which was previously a public asset, by the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives has led to a stark decline in quality of service. I raised this during a Westminster Hall debate on the performance of Royal Mail.

  • I asked the Government about the action that is being taken to reduce the number of children living in temporary accommodation in Stockport: https://tinyurl.com/ywrhhfy4

  • I joined a long list of fellow Labour MPs to call on the Chancellor to increase Machine Games Duty for Category B machines ahead of the 2026 Autumn Budget: https://tinyurl.com/yy9dzdyn

  • After I consistently raised the issue of inaccessibility on our railways, and issues surrounding rolling stock companies, with the Government, I welcome Great British Railways' new Rolling Stock and Infrastructure Strategy, which sets out how GBR will create a railway that is more accessible and better value for taxpayers: https://shorturl.at/UK7X1

  • School funding, especially with regard to SEND support and EHCPs, is an issue that is very important to me. I made a contribution to a Westminster Hall debate on school funding in Stockport: https://tinyurl.com/4p8nxss4

As the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, the Prime Minister is very familiar with Stockport, and I was pleased to have an important conversation with him about the priorities for our town, including housing, Reddish Library and Baths and Stepping Hill Hospital.

As the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, the Prime Minister is very familiar with Stockport, and I was pleased to have an important conversation with him about the priorities for our town, including housing, Reddish Library and Baths and Stepping Hill Hospital.

The Government's new £210 million regeneration package, which includes the Derelict Buildings Fund, will help bring neglected buildings back into use. I wrote to the Secretary of State to make the case for funding for the Reddish Baths and Library site.

1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, I met with Prostate Cancer Research (PCR) to discuss the importance of earlier diagnosis, reducing inequalities in care, and improving outcomes for men affected by prostate cancer.

The Palestinian people continue to face an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. I had an important discussion with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) in Westminster about the work they are carrying out to support Palestinian communities. MAP provides vital emergency medical assistance while also helping to develop a locally led Palestinian healthcare system.

Activists from the Corporate Justice Coalition came to Parliament to call for action to prevent human rights abuses and environmental harm in British supply chains. I caught up with Stockport constituents Jim and Colin, from UNISON Manchester Local Government branch and Manchester Friends of the Earth, to discuss the Good Business Matters pledge. I am backing the pledge, and I will continue to push for fairness in our supply chains.

Royal Mail delays remain unacceptable, and constituents continue to contact me about missed deliveries, delayed post and poor service. Ofcom has fined Royal Mail more than £37 million in the last three years for missing delivery targets. I met with the CEO of Ofcom and separately with Dave Ward, General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), to discuss the action that is needed to improve Royal Mail services.

The NHS Flu vaccination programme is estimated to have prevented around 7,100 deaths and 104,000 hospital admissions last year. The Westminster Vaccination Day was a good opportunity to hear more about the importance of improving vaccine uptake and tackling health inequalities.

If you are eligible, you can book your flu vaccine through your GP surgery, a pharmacy, or other local NHS services: gov.uk/flu-vaccine

Animal welfare is an issue that I am very passionate about, and it has remained a guiding principle for me since I was first elected as the MP for Stockport in 2019. After years of broken promises under the previous Conservative Government, I welcome this Labour Government's Animal Welfare Strategy. Plasma donations help treat more than 50 different conditions, supporting cancer patients, protecting pregnancies, helping children with serious illnesses and treating people with immune disorders. I have been donating blood since 2016; if you are able to do so, please consider donating yourself - https://shorturl.at/px4jt

My Work in Stockport

Since 2011, Stockport has been without an up-to-date, adopted Local Plan, and residents have seen repeated delays while housing need has continued to grow. Read my full statement on the publication of the Plan on my website: https://tinyurl.com/25z9j8xb

You can see my submission to the Stockport Local Plan Regulation 19 consultation above, and I encourage residents to share their views: https://tinyurl.com/4bfj77kh

The need for mental health support across Stockport continues to grow, making services like the new Open Door - Making Space hub more important than ever. By bringing together several charities under one roof, the centre provides immediate crisis support and emotional wellbeing services for residents when they need them most. I was delighted to cut the ribbon at the official launch.

Shaw Heath Coffee opened just two months ago, and I popped in to meet the friendly team behind the business. Local independent businesses make an invaluable contribution to our economy and community, and I will always champion their success. Seeing new ventures open their doors in Stockport, while offering something different for residents to enjoy, is fantastic.

Francis House provides a home and specialist support for young adults with life-limiting and complex health conditions. It was lovely to hear more about the people who live there and the work the team does to make it a warm, welcoming place where residents can thrive, as well as to see their fantastic community project, Rainbow Road.

Strong communities need welcoming public spaces where people can meet and spend time together. Kell and Nicola are doing fantastic work at the Lancashire Hill Community Centre to bring residents together, build community pride and improve the local environment.
