March 2026 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to my March newsletter!

March has been a very busy month with lots of local visits in Stockport and important debates and events in the House of Commons. I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the work I have been doing across Stockport and in Westminster this month.

This month in Stockport, I popped into the Bridgehall Library to mark World Book Day and to look at the brilliant children’s section.

2026 is the National Year of Reading; I am concerned by the prolonged closure of Stockport Central Library which has always played a vital role in supporting people of all ages with reading skills in our town. Watch my video urging Stockport Council to re-open the Library as soon as possible - https://shorturl.at/kjehC

It was a privilege to visit Beechwood Cancer Care with local ward councillor Wendy Wild and see first-hand the incredible work they do to support people and families affected by cancer. Our community is so fortunate to have such a vital service offering practical and emotional support when it is needed most.

I am grateful to the brilliant students at Stockport College for such thoughtful questions during their Student Constituency Clinic. Topics ranged from AI, to my role as a Member of Parliament, student tuition fees, and the situation in Iran.

One of the most enjoyable and special moments for a constituency MP is spending time with local groups, and presenting awards at events. It was extra special to join the Wellie Wanging competition organised by the lovely folks at the Marbury Road Edible Garden (MREG).

It was good to catch up with the new Chief Executive of Stockport Homes, Carmel Chambers, as well as the Board Chair, Steve Partridge. I raised the challenges facing Stockport Homes residents as well as the organisation itself.

Thank you to everyone who joined my second Pride in Place community meeting. It was great to hear directly from residents & local stakeholders on priorities and opportunities for Brinnington.

It was wonderful to join worshippers at the Elaf Mosque to celebrate Eid.

It is deeply upsetting that this same place of worship was vandalised and burgled  just hours after the Eid celebration. I was made aware of the incident on Saturday morning and immediately raised it with Greater Manchester Police. All places of worship, regardless of faith, must be respected and protected. Acts like this have no place in our communities, and I stand in solidarity with those affected.

Despite the very early start, it was a real pleasure to join the first Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast in Stockport constituency this month.

Labour candidate for Edgeley, Mike Naylor, and I joined a productive litter pick on Castle Street.

The re-opening of the Greek Street Bridge is an important milestone for our town. I would like to extend my thanks to everyone at Network Rail, Stockport Council, Murphy Group and Transport for Greater Manchester for their hard work in delivering this safety critical project.

I launched a survey on road conditions and potholes in Stockport constituency; please take a minute to fill it out - https://shorturl.at/aTz40

You can watch my video with Councillors Wendy Wild and Paul Wright, discussing potholes in Davenport & Cale Green ward here - https://shorturl.at/F0gv3

In Parliament this month, I spoke in a number of important debates.

During questions to the Leader of the House of Commons, I urged the Government to allocate time for a parliamentary debate on strengthening enforcement against illegal driving instructors. This is an issue that has been raised with me by local residents - https://shorturl.at/tOZ2D

I also contributed to the debate on the second reading Representation of the People Bill which makes important progress in strengthening electoral participation and protecting candidates. However, I believe that it could go further in lifting standards among elected representatives - https://shorturl.at/lgnw9

In a Westminster Hall debate on Public Baths and Lidos, I raised the decades-old closure of Reddish Baths, as well as the investment needed at the Grand Central swimming pool - https://shorturl.at/QmrKn

Finally, I urged the Government to take action to improve postal services in Stockport and across Greater Manchester - https://shorturl.at/BwwNS

As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, I hosted the first event since the group’s re-establishment. Following the publication of the National Cancer Plan, the meeting brought together organisations and charities from across the country for important discussions about the future of cancer care.

It was great to meet with a local Stockport resident and campaigner from Refugee Action as part of a mass lobby in Westminster on the Government’s proposed “Earned Settlement” changes.

Stockport Car Scheme is a wonderful local charity and has been supporting our residents for over 25 years. It was such a pleasure to welcome some of their volunteers to Parliament.

I attended an important drop-in on the sewage scandal and the Government’s upcoming Water White Paper. It was great to hear directly from frontline activists and campaigners. For too long, profit has been prioritised over public health and environmental protection.

I tabled a Written Parliamentary Question regarding food poverty in Stockport and Greater Manchester. In Stockport in 2025, food banks in the Trussell community provided 10,993 parcels, including 3,864 for children. This is a welcome 16% decrease on the previous year, but a 76% increase compared to 2019 - https://shorturl.at/AjUnt

Stockport is facing a housing crisis, and for too long, delays by the Liberal Democrat-run council left us without a clear plan for the homes we need. Read my website article here - https://shorturl.at/5xqFC

March was another busy month for my constituency office, with my team and I supporting residents from across Stockport on a wide range of issues. Above is a breakdown of the cases we have taken on.

My constituency office is open to visitors from 10:00am to 3.30pm on weekdays (excluding public holidays). I hold regular constituency surgeries as well as drop-in sessions across our constituency. Please get in touch with me if you wish to discuss any issues.
