Listening to Edgeley: Residents Raise Local Priorities
It was a pleasure to meet residents at my recent community drop-in session at St Matthew's Church in Edgeley and hear directly about the issues affecting local people.
These sessions are an important opportunity for residents to share concerns, ask questions and discuss the changes they would like to see in their neighbourhood. I am grateful to everyone who took the time to attend and speak with me.
Following the drop-in, I also spent time doing a walkabout with Greater Manchester Police on Castle Street. It was good to have more conversations and ensure that local businesses had the opportunity to raise the issues that matter to them. I also knocked on doors in Edgeley to ensure that those who could not attend the drop-in session had a chance to speak with me.
A number of themes emerged from these discussions, with car parking, litter and anti-social behaviour among the issues most frequently raised by residents and businesses.
Parking and Road Safety
Parking remains one of the most common concerns I hear from residents across Stockport constituency, and Edgeley is no exception.
Residents highlighted problems including inconsiderate parking, match day parking, pavement parking and road safety concerns at a number of locations, including the junction of Posnett Street and Northgate, Pitt Street, Harrisson Court and Hilton Street.
I have raised these concerns with Stockport Council and will continue to ensure residents' views are heard. While decisions on parking restrictions are made by the Council and local councillors, I will continue pressing for appropriate action where concerns have been identified.
Potholes and Road Repairs
Road conditions and potholes were also raised during the session.
Residents highlighted issues on roads including Chatham Street, Dale Street and York Street. I have raised these concerns and understand that repairs have been carried out in recent months.
The Government has provided additional investment for pothole repairs, and I would encourage residents to report roads in poor condition to the Council directly through their portal: https://tinyurl.com/yc8avyj8
Houses in Multiple Occupation
Many people also raised concerns about the number and concentration of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in parts of Edgeley.
While HMOs provide an important source of housing, I understand concerns about the impact that high concentrations can have on local infrastructure and community cohesion.
I have raised these issues with Stockport Council and in the House of Commons (https://tinyurl.com/53fxnmzb) and welcome the Council's decision to introduce an Article 4 Direction in the area. This will require planning permission for future conversions of family homes into small HMOs, allowing the cumulative impact on the local community to be considered before decisions are made.
Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour
Anti-social behaviour was another issue frequently raised by residents and local businesses, particularly around Castle Street.
I know the impact that persistent anti-social behaviour can have on people's quality of life and on local businesses. That is why I have met with Greater Manchester Police and local business owners to discuss concerns directly and explore how partners can work together to address them: https://tinyurl.com/55htkvpe
I will continue working with the police, Stockport Council and other agencies to ensure concerns raised by residents are acted upon wherever possible. Please contact me if you would like me to raise a specific issue on your behalf.
Keeping in Contact
As your Member of Parliament, my role is to represent local people in Parliament, scrutinise Government policy and ensure the concerns of residents are heard at a national level. However, I also understand that local issues can have a significant impact on everyday life, which is why I regularly work with local authorities, the police and community organisations to help resolve problems raised by constituents.
These community drop-ins form part of my commitment to being visible, accessible and accountable to residents across the constituency.
Over the coming months, I will continue to hold community sessions to speak directly with residents about the issues that matter most to them in every ward. The next session will take place in Brinnington on 31st October 2026, and I look forward to meeting more residents and continuing these important conversations.
