June 2026 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to my June newsletter!

June has been a very busy month with lots of local visits in Stockport and important work in the House of Commons. I would like to take this opportunity to update you on what I have done across Stockport and in Westminster this month.

This month in Stockport, I visited some wonderful local organisations including Transport for Sick Children. They are a fantastic Stockport-based charity providing volunteer transport for children and young people travelling to hospital and clinic appointments across Greater Manchester - Transport for Sick Children

To mark Carers Week, I visited Signpost for Carers to see first-hand the fantastic and wide-ranging support they provide adult and young carers in our town - Home | Signpost for Carers

Based at the iconic Hat Works in Stockport, ARC (Arts for Recovery in the Community) is an outstanding arts and mental health charity. Following my visit to Enterprise Mobility in Stockport, I recommended ARC as a trusted local charity, and I am so pleased that Enterprise Mobility Foundation have donated £2,500 to ARC to help them continue delivering their vital programmes and services for those in need of mental health support.

I met with Chloe & Colin, who are Stockport constituents and volunteers from the Friends of the Earth network. We spoke about their ‘Planet over Profit’ campaign for better regulation of supply chains in order to prevent environmental and human rights infringements at every junction in the supply chain, from raw materials all the way to the British consumer.

Recycling plays an important role in our day-to-day lives, helping to reduce waste, conserve resources, and protect the environment for future generations. As such, it was good to visit Adswood Road Recycling Centre not only to raise residents’ concerns about queues and the access road, but also to see the operation first-hand.

The Stockport Beer Festival is always a highlight of the summer. Thank you to Stockport CAMRA and all of the volunteers for hosting this event for the 38th time.

I visited the Manchester Metropolitan University to learn more about their trailblazing degree apprenticeship programmes.

On 4 June 1967, Stockport was struck by tragedy when a British Midland Airways flight crashed, claiming the lives of 72 people. To mark the anniversary, I visited the memorial at Hopes Carr.

To mark Armed Forces Day, I joined residents, veterans, cadets and service personnel at the celebrations in Stockport town centre. The event was a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and recognise the dedication, bravery and sacrifice of everyone who has served, and continues to serve, in our Armed Forces.

In Parliament this month, I spoke in a number of important debates.

In a Westminster Hall debate on the role of Big Tech in society, I urged the Government to adopt more open-source software across government departments. My full contribution - https://shorturl.at/9zyva

My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the East Midlands Railway train collision. I urged the Transport Secretary to ensure that the British Transport Police, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and East Midlands Railway are supported by the Government to carry out a thorough investigation into this devastating incident - https://shorturl.at/pLMEm

I supported a number of amendments to the Railways Bill, including proposals to improve step-free access across the rail network and to increase services to currently underserved places. During my speech in the House of Commons, I raised several important issues - https://shorturl.at/fBTpS

I urged the Government to support public ownership of the water industry - https://shorturl.at/ZKYbg

During the debate on the NHS Modernisation Bill, it was important that I raised key issues for Stockport including the need for funding for the Stepping Hill Hospital estate, as well as the Greater Manchester ICB’s decision to reduce free IVF provision down to one cycle - https://shorturl.at/xVWim

The Government’s Defence Investment Plan must mean that economic growth and reindustrialisation are felt right across Britain, including here in Stockport. I raised this with the Secretary of State - https://shorturl.at/uAAp4

I was proud to vote to bring the railways and the steel industry into public ownership, as well as to call for the water industry to be nationalised, all in one week.

Labour's Great British Summer Savings scheme launched this month, meaning that parents across Stockport will save on the cost of a day out with their families during the summer holidays. The VAT rate on eligible activities will be cut from 20% to 5%, with over 13,000 families in Stockport set to benefit across the summer.

As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, I had the pleasure of chairing a joint meeting of the APPG on Cancer and APPG on Health, bringing together a wide range of voices to discuss how the National Cancer Plan can deliver greater equity in cancer care.

I was one of the MPs who joined the Cuba Solidarity Campaign outside Parliament to support the campaign by the Trump administration against Cuba.

It was great to join the Independent Booksellers Association for their Independent Bookshop Week drop-in in Westminster. Bookshops are high street anchors; we discussed several issues that independent bookshop owners are facing, as well as the incredible contribution of independent bookshops in Stockport constituency.

I joined the New Hunting Ban in Westminster to support their campaign to close the loopholes that have allowed hunting with hounds to continue under the guise of  “trail hunting” - a smokescreen that too often results in the killing of foxes.

Our frontline workers face immense pressure every day. Too often, they are working with limited resources and without the specialist training needed to identify and help someone experiencing a mental health crisis. That is why I was proud to join Samaritans to back their United With the Frontline campaign.

I joined Mencap for their 80th anniversary reception. It was a great opportunity to celebrate Mencap’s vital work championing the rights of people with a learning disability, and to hear more about the ongoing barriers and inequalities still faced by the 1.5 million people with a learning disability across England and Wales.

I am proud to support the campaign for council tax reform; it is time to fix the most unfair tax in Britain. I joined parliamentary colleagues to show my support for this campaign - https://shorturl.at/O3U9W

The deadline to register to vote for the Greater Manchester Mayoral election is Tuesday 14 July 2026. The vote will take place on Thursday 30 July. Register to vote here - Register to vote - GOV.UK

June was another busy month for my constituency office, with my team and I supporting residents from across Stockport on a wide range of issues.

My constituency office is open to visitors from 10:00am to 3.30pm on weekdays (excluding public holidays). I hold regular constituency surgeries as well as drop-in sessions across our constituency. Please get in touch with me if you wish to discuss any issues.
