Hello and welcome to my July newsletter!
July has been a very busy month with lots of local visits in Stockport and important work in the House of Commons ahead of the summer recess. I would like to take this opportunity to update you on what I have done across Stockport and in Westminster this month.
This month, Britain welcomed a new Prime Minister. Prime Minister Burnham has a strong record of delivering for the people of Stockport and Greater Manchester, and I look forward to working with him to secure even more investment, opportunity and prosperity for our town.
In Parliament, I spoke in several debates, including leading my own debate on Government support for regeneration in Reddish:
Reddish is a wonderful area, and it deserves its fair share of funding and investment. During my debate, I raised a number of important issues with the Government, including underinvestment in Reddish by Stockport Council, the future of the Reddish Baths site, the need for urgent repairs at Reddish Library and problems faced by residents at Lancashire Hill. Vernon Building Society in Stockport is a truly mutual organisation, owned wholly by its members rather than external shareholders. However, as the building society sector grows, there are emerging concerns about governance and accountability. I am concerned by a number of Nationwide Building Society’s practices and I pressed the Government on this matter - https://shorturl.at/f0kaw
I am proud to represent KNDS in the Heatons, who employ hundreds of workers on skilled, well-paid, unionised jobs. Alongside visiting KNDS this month, I urged the Government to ensure that the Defence Investment Plan will mean that economic growth and reindustrialisation are felt right across Britain, including here in Stockport - https://shorturl.at/TCFca
I also attended many important parliamentary events, meeting with people from a range of groups and organisations:
Reverend Will Rubie from St Martin’s and Reverend Chris Blunt from St Mary’s joined me for an exceptionally early start in Westminster for the annual National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast. The service was inspiring and rooted in Biblical principles of justice and love for neighbours, sentiments needed more than ever in today’s world.
It is always a pleasure to welcome Stockport residents to the House of Commons. My good friend Ileriayo, who runs the Expression Concert Music Foundation, and his family joined me, as well as members from the U3A Heatons and Reddish group, which does great work supporting those who are retired in our town to find community.

I joined Adoption UK and Kinship to meet with adoptive parents and kinship carers and hear directly about their experiences. Their stories were a powerful reminder of the incredible love and commitment these families show every day, and the challenges they continue to face.
The Labour Friends of Palestine and Trades Union Congress organised a briefing for Labour MPs regarding Palestinian rights and the Labour movement. We heard from Shaher Sae’d (General Secretary of the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions), Dr Hind Benammar (Executive Secretary of the Arab Trade Union Confederation) and His Excellency Dr Husam Zomlot (Ambassador of the State of Palestine to the United Kingdom).
It was a privilege to host the fifth edition of the RAF and Asian Voice ‘Be the Change’ panel discussion in Parliament this month. This year we focused on climate change. Sadly, in the wake of consecutive heatwaves, harsh winters, flooding, and wildfires, this conversation could not be more relevant. We heard from RAF personnel about the work the RAF is doing to decarbonise their bases, as well as working and living with the environment at the forefront.
Ensuring young people have access to healthy, nutritious food is so important. I joined Tesco to learn more about the impact of their Free Fruit and Veg for Schools programme, and it was great to meet Emma from Adswood Primary School and hear first-hand about how the programme is making a difference to children and families in Stockport.
In my role as the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, I met with Cancer Research UK to discuss new treatments and innovations which are sadly taking too long to reach patients. I am supporting Cancer Research UK in their mission to unlock cancer breakthroughs.
The highlight of my month is always visiting local community groups and organisations here in Stockport:
I recently conducted a community survey asking Brinnington residents how they think £20 million Pride in Place funding should be spent in their neighbourhood. I was out in Brinnington recently with Nikki (Chair of the Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board), visiting some of the locations that were highlighted and discussing the priorities residents raised, including accessible transport, better leisure facilities, more youth services, better work skills and opportunities, safer streets and better parks and green spaces - https://shorturl.at/46oMz
There is always a wonderful atmosphere at Stockport Pride. Despite the less-than-summery weather, it was a pleasure to join again this year and to see our community come together in such a positive way.
Every day, the Stockport Car Scheme helps people across our community by providing transport for vulnerable, disabled, elderly and isolated residents, helping them get to medical appointments, social activities and other essential destinations. It was a real pleasure to attend their Annual Garden Party.
Councillor Dean Fitzpatrick and I joined the wonderful community celebration marking the 125th anniversary of St Martin’s Church.
I had the honour of joining celebrations for the retirement of Bernard, a community stalwart whose dedication, kindness and tireless volunteering have helped make Heaton Norris Community Centre the beating heart of the local community. Bernard, who was recognised as Stockport Rocks' One Stockport Volunteer of the Year 2025, played a crucial role in saving the Community Centre.
Thank you to 1st Heaton Chapel Guides for inviting me to join them as they celebrated their hard work and earned new badges for their Take Action campaigns.
Autisk is a fantastic asset to Stockport, providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for young people while also giving much-needed respite to parents and carers. I have always been a strong supporter of Autisk and the vital role it plays in our community. That is why I will continue to do everything I can to help secure the investment and facilities they deserve.

Pubs and hospitality venues are at the heart of communities across the Stockport constituency. They are places where people come together, where local musicians get their start, where sports clubs and community groups meet, and where families and friends celebrate life's milestones. I welcome the new Prime Minister's announcement that, from April 2027, pubs, clubs and live music venues will receive a further 20% cut to their business rates bills - Backing Stockport's Pubs and Hospitality Venues with Lower Business Rates — Navendu Mishra MP
Stockport’s schools are brilliant centres of learning. But, for too long, they have not been backed to cater for a wide range of needs. Labour is committed to making our schools more inclusive. July was another busy month for my constituency office, with my team and I supporting residents from across Stockport on a wide range of issues.
