January Newsletter
This month has been an incredibly busy start to the year, full of local visits, casework enquiries and business in the House of Commons. As 2026 begins, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the work I have been doing across Stockport and in Westminster.
January was another busy month for my constituency office, with my team and I supporting residents from across Stockport on a wide range of issues. In 2025, we resolved 99.8% of cases.
I caught up with the Health Secretary to discuss the urgent need for further investment at Stepping Hill Hospital. This Labour Government is delivering record levels of funding for the NHS estate which is already starting to make a difference, but I want to see much more investment for Stepping Hill Hospital - https://shorturl.at/YmCmR
Following on from a meeting with Swim England, I visited Stockport Metro Swimming Club at Grand Central. The dedication of the swimmers and coaches is clear, and Stockport Metro continues to be a vital pathway for young people to progress in the sport.
I will continue to call for much needed investment into the Grand Central Pool so that clubs like Stockport Metro have the facilities they need to continue to thrive.
This year, community-led regeneration will begin in Brinnington under Labour’s Pride in Place Programme. As the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Steve Reed, sets out, residents can help decide how Brinnington’s £20 million funding allocation will be spent. Shared Lives is a care and support service for adults aged 18 and over who want to live independently, with the support of a family and a strong community network. It is an alternative to supported living or residential care. I was delighted to meet with Deborah and Maggie to learn more about their fantastic work.
I was deeply concerned to hear about the immediate closure of Adswood Young People's Centre. The centre is home to Autisk who were sadly given no notice of this closure. Please consider making a donation to help Autisk - https://shorturl.at/NHMx5
Labour recently announced the biggest investment in rail connectivity in a generation. Through Northern Powerhouse Rail, up to £45 billion will be invested to finally give the North the transport links it deserves.
I urged the Secretary of State for Transport to consider reinstating direct connectivity between Stockport Station and Manchester Airport, and to prioritise disabled access across our railways by strengthening the Access for All scheme - https://shorturl.at/Azo7p
It was important to attend Greater Manchester Combined Authority's conference on SEND reform at Stalybridge Civic Hall with the Minister for School Standards, alongside Mayor Andy Burnham, council leaders, education officers and fellow MPs from across Greater Manchester.
As always, the annual Open Doors World Watch List event offered a powerful insight into the reality facing Christians who experience persecution and discrimination around the world.
One of the best parts of being an MP is visiting schools and taking questions from young people. My thanks to all the students and staff at the Covenant Christian School in the Heatons for giving me a tour and asking me a wide range of questions.
I attended the Campaign for Gigi drop-in in Parliament to hear directly from parents whose trust was broken in the most devastating way, and to learn why urgent action is needed to make nurseries safer for children.
I support the campaign’s three clear and life-saving asks: mandatory CCTV in childcare settings, a stronger Ofsted inspection regime with more unannounced inspections, and clear statutory safe sleep guidance with mandatory training for all nursery staff.
The Government’s Animal Welfare Strategy contains important commitments that, if delivered, will significantly improve the lives of millions of animals. You can see my contribution to a Westminster Hall debate on the strategy here - https://shorturl.at/X6ch2
It was a pleasure to join the fourth Smart Works Unemployment Index annual report launch which examines the barriers women face when seeking work. I am grateful to everyone at Smart Works Greater Manchester for all they do to support women in Stockport and across Greater Manchester.
I held a constituency drop-in at my office with Heatons South Councillors as well as a session in Heaton Norris. As usual, the sessions were very well attended and a wide range of issues were raised.
Thank you to Bhavna for welcoming me to Gigi Supermarket with the Federation of Independent Retailers to discuss the big issues facing small shops like the one her family have run since 1985.
It was invaluable to hear directly from midwives, maternity support workers and students at the Royal College of Midwives’ event in Westminster about the intense pressures they face every day. I fully support the RCM’s call for proper investment in maternity services, leadership, training and safe, equitable care for all.
The Reddish North Labour team and I encourage all Reddish residents to fill out our survey on the future of Reddish Baths - https://shorturl.at/8q6Mp
I am deeply concerned by the decision to reduce NHS-funded IVF provision across Greater Manchester to just one cycle. I have now submitted a Written Parliamentary Question to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, pressing the Government on the impact of this decision - https://shorturl.at/b7AuU
My constituency office is open to visitors from 10:00am to 3.30pm on weekdays (excluding public holidays). I hold regular constituency surgeries as well as coffee mornings across our constituency. Please get in touch with me if you wish to discuss any issues.
