My work holding the Government to account over the decline of British rail

Navendu Mishra MP speaking in the House of Commons.

I have been vocal in my criticisms of the Conservative Government’s mismanagement of our rail system and in my calls for reform.

Please find some examples of my work holding the Government to account over its failure to ensure that private rail companies are delivering for Stockport below.

  • I submitted a Written Parliamentary Question to the Secretary of State for Transport to raise overcrowding on British trains. Overcrowding has become a major issue and reduces accessibility, safety and value for money for passengers.

  • I have given several speeches in the House of Commons outlining my vehement opposition to the Government’s plan to allow the closure of thousands of train ticket offices in Britain, including all three in Stockport constituency. This proposal represented an assault on accessibility and the clear prioritisation of profit above the needs of passengers, as you can watch me argue here.

  • I gave a speech in the House of Commons criticising Avanti West Coast for its appalling performance, including record-breaking delays, cancellations and complaints, and the Government’s irresponsible decision to renew its contract anyway.

  • I submitted a Written Parliamentary Question to ask the Government about the proportion of Avanti West Coast trains that were cancelled between Stockport and London Euston in the last six months.” Given that the Government is responsible for holding rail companies accountable and choosing how to allocate public contracts, it is deeply concerning that they had no answer to this question.

  • Speaking in a debate in the House of Commons, I raised TransPennine Express’ appalling service provision, and in particular its frequent and excessive use of p-coded notices to cancel trains, leaving thousands of people stranded.

  • I wrote a letter to the Secretary of State for Transport to hold the Government to account about its decision to extend Avanti’s contract in spite of the company’s continued mismanagement and poor performance.

  • I wrote a letter to the Secretary of State for Transport to raise Avanti’s reduction of its already poor service provision in Stockport.
