December Newsletter

Hello and welcome to my December newsletter!

December has been an incredibly busy month, full of local visits, casework enquiries and business in the House of Commons. As the end of the year approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the work I have been doing across Stockport and in Westminster this month.

To recognise their incredible contributions, this year, I launched the Stockport Small Business Saturday Awards. I would like to thank everyone in Stockport constituency who nominated their favourite small businesses. After receiving over 3,000 votes in the final round, I was delighted to visit each winner personally to deliver their award. I was proud to vote for Labour’s Employment Rights Bill, which has now passed into law. This will bring forward the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation including banning exploitative zero hour contracts, sick pay from day one, banning fire and rehire and stronger family leave.

We all have a role to play in stopping HIV. This World AIDS Day, I joined the APPG on HIV & AIDS to discuss how by raising awareness, supporting prevention, and ensuring access to treatment, we can achieve zero new transmissions.

There are 16 million disabled people in the UK, that is 1 in 4 of us. The disabled population in Stockport constituency is over 20,000 people. On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities this month, I joined Scope to learn more about the extra cost of disability and some of the main issues currently facing disabled people.

It was a pleasure to meet members of the Mercian Regiment which is the local county Infantry regiment for our constituency. The Mercian Regiment recruits from the five counties that formed the ancient Kingdom of Mercia; Cheshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire, as well as parts of the Black Country and the Wirral. It was very special to meet the regiment's mascot on the Terrace!

Christmas is an exceptionally busy period for postal workers. It was an early, cold and damp morning when I visited the Royal Mail delivery office on Green Lane to thank all the staff for their hard work. I met with staff, management and representatives from the Communication Workers Union to discuss increasing demands and significant changes to the postal service and the impact these have on the workforce. It was great to hear their insights on what is needed in respect of investment for the changing nature of the delivery sector.

I also joined Royal Mail in Parliament for their Christmas fundraising event in support of the British Heart Foundation. I was delighted to post a Christmas card myself, with Royal Mail making a donation to the BHF in return.

Stockport Mind has created a fantastic community calendar featuring stunning photography of Stockport landmarks, key mental health awareness dates and practical wellbeing tips. You can get your calendar from my office and make a donation here - https://shorturl.at/oJ7Gx

It was brought to my attention that the post box opposite the Moorside Road Post Office was wrapped up and as such out of use. I raised this with Royal Mail (who are responsible for Post Boxes) and I am delighted that the issue has now been resolved.

The new post box has solar panels which power a digitally-activated drawer, allowing customers to deposit small parcels.

Labour’s Railways Bill means fewer delays, 21st Century ticketing, frozen regulated fares and passengers before profits. I hope that this reform can go hand in hand with investment in the rail services that serve the people of Stockport and Greater Manchester. In the House of Commons, I raised the lack of rail services at Reddish South Station, much needed funding for the British Transport Police and poor accessibility across stations in Stockport among other important issues. - https://fb.watch/E2sRvmmoBi/

Labour has delivered £20 million for Brinnington through the Pride in Place Programme and this is an opportunity for residents to help shape how this money is spent. You can share your views on my local survey here-  https://forms.gle/jT3i6X2Mq89JdvHX6

Police staff make up 40% of the police workforce, and I was pleased to meet with Unison Union branch officials for Greater Manchester Police this week in Westminster. It was important for me to hear directly from local police staff workers and show my support for the work that keeps our communities safe.

Earlier this year, you will recall, I opposed the relocation and restructuring of Stockport’s Crown Post Office and its workforce. Since its move to the TG Jones unit on the first floor, many residents have shared concerns with me about accessibility, long queues, reduced collection times, poor staffing, and inadequate facilities at the new branch. I have witnessed these problems first-hand, and the current service is simply not good enough. You can read my full letter to the Post Office here- https://shorturl.at/YT6aY

I visited Chelwood Foodbank Plus with Councillor Wendy Wild and Councillor Paul Wright to drop off a donation ahead of the busy Christmas period. Huge thanks to all of the volunteers who work tirelessly to support people across our community. If you can, please consider supporting their vital work with a donation - https://shorturl.at/pGcgj

Councillor Paul Wright and I delivered some Christmas cards in Cale Green.

It was great to talk to local businesses in Reddish with Councillor Rachel Wise ahead of the Christmas Lights Switch On at Houldsworth Square.
