August Newsletter
It may be the summer recess from the House of Commons but I have continued to visit many places and meet with lots of residents and organisations across Stockport constituency. Alongside this, August was also another busy month for my constituency office, with my team and I supporting residents with a wide range of casework.
To mark VJ Day this month, I attended a service at St Mary’s in the Marketplace to remember the courage of those who served and those who never returned home. I want to thank all our veterans and their families in Stockport and across the Commonwealth for their enduring strength and service. My thanks also to Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation (SAFCO), Stockport Normandy Veterans Legacy and Reverend Chris Blunt for a special Civic Service.
August also marked Indian Independence Day. Thank you to the Consul General of India for inviting me to celebrate 79 years of independent India and reflect on the rich contributions of the British Indian diaspora to British society and culture at the Consulate in Cheadle.
I held another drop-in session in Brinnington. It was great to meet residents with local Councillor Karl Wardlaw.
Pubs are the beating heart of our community and it was a pleasure to join Chris, Alan and the Team at the Crown Inn on Heaton Lane ahead of their official opening following an extensive refurbishment.
I joined St John Ambulance to learn about the first aid services at St John House on Crossley Road during their Open Day. St John Ambulance volunteers and staff provide life saving training, as well as paramedic support across Britain.
John and his team run a family friendly pottery studio at Brooklyn Pottery on Shaw Heath. It was wonderful to visit them. More information- https://www.facebook.com/share/19WC2h4uks/?mibextid=wwXIfr
Pladis continues to invest into our local McVitie’s factory and I am proud to represent such an iconic manufacturer from Stockport. Earlier this month, Minister Justin Madders MP visited to see the excellent operations and to engage with employees and trade union representatives.
It is always a pleasure to catch up with RMT trade union representatives and frontline staff. We discussed issues such as staffing levels, fixed-term contracts, assistance for passengers with disabilities and gateline staff safety. We need real investment for Stockport station, both in terms of staff as well as the station itself.
Following the meeting, I wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport to raise a number of concerns about the condition, safety, and staffing levels at the station.
I caught up with my neighbour Jeff Smith MP at East Didsbury Metrolink station. We are both delighted that this Labour Government has announced a £2.5 billion package for Greater Manchester public transport, including funding the extension of the tram network into Stockport. This is the real transformative difference that Labour in Government is making for the people of Stockport as well as Greater Manchester.
The drop-in session provided by Headway Charity South Manchester and Stockport branch proved to be extremely insightful. Headway supports brain injury survivors, their families and carers, in and around South Manchester and Stockport. It was a great privilege to chat to volunteers, trustees, staff and members.
It was great to visit Brinnington Pantry with Councillor Karl Wardlaw. All donations are welcome at the Pantry- including tinned food, pasta sauce and washing powder. You can drop off donations at Woodley Life Leisure and other locations in Stockport. My thanks to all of the Pantry team and volunteers who support this vital service.
I stopped by the Cat’s Cauldron, a new independent shop that has just opened next to my office in Stockport. It is fantastic to see more small businesses choosing to set up in the town centre and adding something unique to the local high street.
It is always wonderful to visit the brilliant team at the Cancer Research UK shop on Warren Street.
Reddish Baths and Community Centre have long been at the heart of the local community.
Thank you to Councillor Rachel Wise and Councillor David Wilson for joining me on a visit to the site and for their continued dedication to local issues. I am also grateful to Stockport Council staff for facilitating this site visit. We had positive discussions with Stockport Council officers about potential future plans for the site and how it could once again serve the community.
Having been contacted by residents with their concerns about their flats I asked Stockport Homes to accompany me on a walkabout to learn more about the issues affecting the area. Report a repair here- https://www.stockporthomes.org/my-home/repairs/
I added my name to a letter addressed to the Prime Minister which calls on the Government to coordinate an urgent evacuation route for students in Gaza who have achieved scholarships to study in the UK.

The Post Office is currently consulting on the future of Stockport Crown Post Office branch, and I encourage local residents to take part. I am disappointed by the Government’s decision to close the Crown/Directly Managed branch network - these public sites are vital to residents, small businesses and employ people on good terms & conditions.
