April 2026 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to my April newsletter!
April has been a very busy month with lots of local visits in Stockport and important debates and events in the House of Commons. I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the work I have been doing across Stockport and in Westminster this month.
I am always proud to support the vibrant pub and beer sector in Stockport. It was extra special to catch up with Matthew Curtis, the author of the excellent book Manchester’s Best Beer Pubs and Bars, over a lovely pint at the iconic Crown on Heaton Lane.
Councillor Jon Byrne and I visited Stockport Station to discuss issues with Avanti’s Ticket Vending Machines - https://shorturl.at/mfyvX
The Friends of Reddish South Station are a dedicated local group campaigning to bring proper passenger services back to the station. Together, we met with Mayor Andy Burnham to discuss the future of Reddish South.
Given the importance of the Grand Central pool to both local residents and the wider sporting community, I wrote to the Minster for Sport asking her to engage directly with Stockport Council to discuss how its future can be secured - https://shorturl.at/tzypt
I am disappointed that the Reddish Post Office remains closed, with no clear timeframe for reopening. This branch is a vital local asset, and many residents rely on it for essential services. I wrote to the Post Office to ask for clarity on when the branch will reopen - https://shorturl.at/gLO3k
In Parliament this month, I spoke in two important debates.
A large number of Stockport constituents wrote to me to raise serious concerns about the ethical implications of using Palantir’s technology within our NHS. I raised this issue during a Westminster Hall debate on the NHS Federated Data Platform - https://shorturl.at/EMtcl
This Labour Government has allocated a record £7.3 billion to councils to repair potholes, but despite this significant investment, Liberal Democrat–run Stockport Council is leaving many of our roads in truly shocking condition. I raised this issue with the Leader of the House of Commons - https://shorturl.at/aTz40

This month marked World Parkinson’s Day and I was proud to voice my support for everyone living with Parkinson’s across Stockport, Britain and around the world.
It also marked International Workers’ Memorial Day. I reflected on all those who have died because of work and reaffirmed my commitment to making work safer.
It was really valuable to speak with the team from Money Wellness in Westminster about the financial pressures facing households in Stockport and the practical ways people can be supported. Money Wellness offers free, expert advice on debt, budgeting, and improving financial well-being - https://www.moneywellness.com/
At an event organised by UK Flour Millers, I caught up with Alex Nelstrop from Stockport’s Nelstrops Mill. Nelstrops is one of the oldest millers in Britain and is proudly run today by the sixth generation of the Nelstrop family.
I also joined Blue Cross to discuss their important work with police forces, local authorities and delivery companies to educate dog owners and delivery workers on responsible dog ownership and safety around dogs.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Fairtrade exists to promote the movement within Parliament; we had a productive meeting this month.
I wrote directly to NHS England regarding the decision by NHS Greater Manchester to reduce NHS-funded IVF provision to only one full cycle, joined by Rebecca Long-Bailey MP. This follows a letter I sent last month to the Health Secretary which was co-signed by several MPs from across Greater Manchester - https://shorturl.at/8IxJG
In my capacity as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, I contributed a piece for New Statesman magazine’s Cancer and Oncology Spotlight - https://shorturl.at/GHRwS
On the 1st of May, private renters in Stockport are going to gain a range of new rights under Labour’s Renters’ Rights Act - https://shorturl.at/jTKAF
April was another busy month for my constituency office, during which my team and I provided support to residents from across Stockport.
It has been great to be out talking to residents across Stockport with Labour's local election candidates. We have had many important discussions about a range of local and national issues.

My constituency office is open to visitors from 10:00am to 3.30pm on weekdays (excluding public holidays). I hold regular constituency surgeries as well as drop-in sessions across our constituency. Please get in touch with me if you wish to discuss any issues.
